Ha! Did you see that? Tomat-woe!
I'm so funny...
For once people I want some advice, and considering neither of my regular followers ever feel inclined to comment, I thought I might use this opportunity to ask you a question. I hope you don't mind. I also hope you answer!
I am growing two Black Cherry tomato plants in my 6-ft high greenhouse. (It's actually called a Wall Garden.) Currently they are about 5'10 and have 2 trusses of tomato flowers each. Which is just fucking ridiculous. They each have half a grow-bag to grow in, and both look healthier than I do. (Which is pretty buff if I say so myself.) So what do I do? Do I let them hit the roof and let the bastards squirm their way along the ceiling, blocking out any light the other seedlings might need? Or should I nip off the tops and just have the produce from both plants with 2 trusses each? Might they even grow more trusses?
Unfortunately it turns out the variety I'm growing is a bloody vine/intermediate variety. Which means they will grow a lot taller if I do nothing. In fact the Thompson & Morgan website says they grow 2 metres high. Shame the Thompson & Morgan seed packet omitted that fact.
Maybe I should just take the roof off the greenhouse?

We appreciate every single comment and secretly long for them. Feel free to say anything, be it rude, unhelpful or possibly even relevant. They will all be loved and will probably be replied to as well. More importantly we don't have word verification, we're annoying enough already.
We're in it together. Especially when it's going wrong.

My Black Cherry tomatoes grow up over the roof of my house, and I have to use a ladder to pick them.

How about putting a bucket of heavy soil next to it, inserting a very tall stake, and start training the top down the stake by tying it loosely as it grows? Or just insert the stake in the container where the plant is growing, if there is room. Or maybe your other follower will come along with a better idea. ;-)
Oh bugger... I think i'm going to remove a bit of the roof. They're only in 16ltrs of tomato compost as well. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that they're doomed to failure anyway. :-(
DeleteThank-you for the tips though. :-)
Open the roof. Pretend your house is now a tree house.
ReplyDeletehaha. To open the roof, I actually have to dismantle it!
DeleteYou could have stopped them when the got tall and allowed the side shoots to grow, this would also spread the season out. Maybe next year try a different variety. My mum like cherry toms and they are about 3ft tall, they have about16-20 toms on each truss but due to the weather there aren't many trusses this year (mine are outside). Sorry I don't comment much but between 2 blogs, 5 FB pages, the allotment & garden I don't get much chance. Not to mention signing in on the wrong account, writing a comment then having to do it all again on the right ID. So if I ever post as Fizz..it's really me. lol
ReplyDeleteYou have 2 blogs and 5 Facebook pages?? I only know of one blog! I'm not surprised! I have enough trouble writing for this one! You'll have to send me some links. Thanks for popping by. I do love your blog. (The one I know of anyway)
